The Urban Death
Project is the brainchild of Seattle architect Katrina Spade, who came up with
the concept in 2011. Spade calls composting a meaningful, sanitary and
ecological alternative to burial and cremation. But the project has significant legal and
regulatory hurdles to surmount before it can get under way.
The project would
need to obtain a license to operate a funeral home, tackle local zoning restrictions,
which require composting facilities to be outside populated areas. But before
those issues can be addressed, the group and its proponents would have to push
through a change to state law, which requires that all human remains be buried,
cremated, donated to science or transferred out of state. At a minimum there
would need to be a change in state law.
Bodies would be
refrigerated on site for up to 10 days. No embalming would be necessary, since
decomposition is the goal. After a ceremony - religious or not - friends and
family would help insert the body into the core. Over several weeks a body
would turn into about one cubic yard of compost, enough to plant a tree or a
patch of flowers. The compost could be taken by the family or left for use or
donation by the Urban Death Project.
But would people
want this option? Does the prospect of feeding an apple tree in
post-life appeals to you? Would you eat the apples after? And why not ?
If I don't know who's the "compost " I don't think I care.
ReplyDeleteOnce I know the apple is grown from a tree that has been fed human compost, that takes on a creepy feeling ! I "think" about it & I rather avoid that ...lol..
What I mean is, I'll keep thinking about it, it'll sort of haunt me Iguess ...lol...
ReplyDeleteBut if everyone is doing it, it takes the novelty away, & you'll get used to it in no time :))
DeleteVery organic & green idea- I like :))
What if the person fertilizing the tree was very sick with some infectious disease before he expire :)) ?
DeleteDon't think that'll be a problem as it must involve some sort of incineration process. The fire will destroy all germs or bacteria from the disease.
DeleteBut I tot "compost" means letting the organic stuff, rot /degenerate or what ever you call it by itself? It's suppose to be moist !
DeleteYup some even use worms to speed up the process :))
DeleteCircle of life. I really don't mind "feeding" some great oak tree when I'm gone. It's almost romantic ....lol...
ReplyDeleteActually this is very practical. Especially in Spore. We don't have space to bury the decease & the cost is very high.
DeleteIf you think of it, there's not much difference between the cemetery and landfill. Both get filled with a waste product that is no longer wanted and could pose a health risk if not safely disposed of into the ground. So, I fully support this idea of turning corpses to corps!
ReplyDeleteBut it's creepy to think of your beloved (mum or dad) rotting away in the ground to feed some trees :((
DeleteDon't think they intent to just dump the dead body under the tree ...lol...
DeleteI'm sure there is a process to turn the body into a "compost " before 'feeding' to the plants.
Still it'll be some time before people can get used to the idea.
The thought of turning my parents into a compost is creepy & sad :((
Deletelol.....
DeleteYou mean you can sell your parents remains to these recycle companies after they deceased ??? Wow... what a thought, after all your parents have done for you- like clothing & educating you !!! Your kids might do the same to you in the future ...haha..
ReplyDeleteLook on the bright side, if your kids do sell you as a " compost"....lol... you probably wont know anyway, as you'll be long DEAD !!!!
DeleteAll these feelings & emotions are only felt by humans- the living ones :))
Besides if you have not done much while you are alive, why not benefit some plant when you are gone? :))
LOL.....
DeleteThe spirit might be attached to the remains (composite). Which means it might be attached to the "food"- you eat it. In the end, you might get haunted by the deceased !
ReplyDeleteSo no way I'm going to eat food grown from crops which uses human composite as fertilizer !
This is the 21st century ,dont be so superstitious. It's all in the mind. Besides you seriously don't know what they are putting in your food anyway ! They use human excrement as fertilizer & you are ok but not human composite?
DeleteIf you Don't know, you don't have to care. Bliss of the innocence ...lol...
DeleteHuman kind has been on this earth for thousands of years. The whole planet is full of dead bodies. If you think like that, where's the fear? When you die you just return to the ground, very natural.
ReplyDeleteSure...I'll eat one of those apples or durians ...lol...
ReplyDeleteThey used to fertilize cops with human waste in the past anyways, if that's not gross enough, so now I don't see anything wrong with human compost :)
DeleteLOL...... you mean crops ???? hahahhhahaa.............
DeleteMy friend's dad died & requested his ashes to be "thrown" into the sea. Not very conventional for our society- anyway that would mean some fishes might eat it & some of us might eat these fishes ....lol....
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm trying to say is, seriously what's the big deal? We are all recycled somehow:))
LOL... I advise everyone not to over-think things. You are not concern about all those pesticides they spread onto the crops but the origin of some fertilizers ???
